Reunion

I've always been one of those people who are afraid of change. I've always thought that if things stayed the same, then things would stay fine. But, when I went to college, I learned that change is inevitable and that it can be good. I learned that if you stay stuck in your ways, it can lead to some pretty miserable times. There is always that fear of the unknown, but knowing that God is in control and that he is going to take care of everything makes that fear go away. Things may be difficult, or they may be easy squeezy lemon peezy, but God is always in control.

One thing I've always wanted to do is live in my hometown of Opelika when I get older and out of college. I've always loved living here and I just feel like it's a great place to be. But I know, that God may have other plans and that's cool with me now. After watching my two best friends get married this past weekend, I learned that I don't have to stay here and fulfill what I want. Where would that get me?  I can go wherever God leads me and as long as I can serve him, that is enough. Making new friends, and reuniting with old friends and people I haven't seen in a long time reminds me that it doesn't matter where any of us go. We always have this home that reunites us. We have our friends that reunite us.

As for now, I have maybe one year of college left and I plan to make the most of every opportunity given to me. Beginning now, things change for the better. No more "what do I want?" but "where is He leading me?"
Maybe this makes sense to you, maybe it doesn't. Either way, you know what's up. So ask me how I'm doing with this new perspective. It'll keep me in check. Preesh.

Secrest out.

The Lone Table sitters

Ok, so you know how when you sit at a table in a restaurant with a large group of people, the few people who sit in the middle of the table get the butt end of the conversations? The people on the left & right of you start forming their own little "cliques" for time being and if you try to enter their conversation, they look at you like, "Hey, get your own topics for discussion." So then you're stuck at the table sitting across from this other poor soul who gets left on the other side looking straight back at you. You don't know what to say, because you know who the person is, but you don't know the person well enough to carry on a meaningful conversation. So you may say to this person, "Hey how about this heat we're having?" Or, "Boy, I'm sure glad we don't have any elbow room because these fatsos are cramping me in." (You can say this because there is a high chance that everyone at the table will ignore you.)

The moral of this story is be the first one to sit down. That way you can ignore the schmuck who sits in the middle.

P.S. You never get the appetizers when you sit in the middle. Or the napkins.

Is there a more relaxing feeling than just lying down and listening to the rain while soft jazz is playing in the background? I think not.

Two of my favorite things in the whole world together at the same time. It’s enough to make you fall asleep and just wake up renewed. The smoothness of the music just tick tocking back and forth mixed with the delicate touches of each rain drop falling on the surface. I get relaxed just thinking about it. I close my eyes and my good friends John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk greet me with a haunting version of Round Midnight. Thank the Lord for this blessed opportunity to stop and enjoy two of his most wondrous creations.

A bouncing thought...(it's about basketball, get it?)

Ok, so let’s get one thing straight. Basketball will never be king in Alabama as long as football is still around. Now, for the rest of the story.

The Auburn men’s basketball team gets a lot of negative feedback on the court and off the court. Are they the best team in the country? No. Are they the worst team in the country? Absolutely not. Do they play hard just like everybody else? You bet. Do they wish that they could be a powerhouse? I would like to think so.

This team is just that; a team. They play their hearts and souls out every night in front of a small number of people, and that is a major problem. If you were a college athlete and you ran out on the court for shoot-around, and you saw maybe 50 students in the student section and probably around 1500 people in the rest of the seats, would that get you motivated to play? Yes, I’ve heard the phrase, “winning breeds fans,” but come on! For a university that prides itself on athletics, the turnouts at the games are pretty embarrassing. Some people say, “Well, it’s just hard for me to come to games because they play so late.” Whatever. You know that if there was a football game on Thursday evening at 6:30, you would probably be there around 4.

Frankie Sullivan, a sophomore guard: "It's like an imaginary sixth man," said Sullivan of the Tigers' crowd support. "When we go on the road, we see that a lot of times. Our fans don't support us like that all the time. I wish they would. It brings a lot of energy. It turns me on. I'm ready to play every game, but the crowd just gives you a boost like an energy drink. Hopefully, they come out more, we really need it."

This was after the Tigers nearly defeated then ranked #2 Kentucky. By the way, there were maybe 3000 Kentucky fans at the game.

Most people blame this year’s lack of success on the coach. The coach isn’t out there playing. Lebo is a good coach. He knows the ins and outs of the game. He is a pretty good play designer. Yes he has been here for six years in which two of those he had winning seasons. But honestly, do you expect Auburn to shell out the big bucks for a big name coach? I sure don’t. If Lebo is let go and another mid-major coach is hired, the same situation most likely happen again.

At least give him one year in the new arena. I think he deserves that. Don’t you think he did at least a little politicking to get that thing built? He’s bringing in another highly-touted class for 2011. It’s a class that has someone at every position to build depth.

If you are an Auburn fan, then you support Auburn. You don’t hate Auburn. You don’t just support football. You don’t leave a game with two minutes left when we are playing Alabama and only down by one. Our fans cease to amaze me. Get on board children.

2009 Season Recap

Well, another year of college football has come and gone. Alabama returned to football glory after a 17-year hiatus. The S.E.C. established its dominance once again, and we saw the end of an era with the exit of Bobby Bowden at Florida State. Now, we move on to another decade of what promises to be full of excitement, controversy, and the everlasting argument of whether there should be a playoff or not.

How does college football live without Tim Tebow, who is arguably the greatest college football player of all time? It will just have to. Sure, there may not be another player with his character, determination, and impact, but, there will be great players and future stars. I think Tebow’s impact on college football is probably one of the greatest things to ever happen to the sport. His effect will last for a very long time. There, that’s my homage to Tim Tebow.

The Auburn Tigers are finally back. All you Gene Chizik haters can stick a big ‘ol piece of humble pie in that mouth of yours…I know I did. I was a fan of Turner Gill-and I’m glad he’s getting his shot at Kansas-but regardless of who you were pulling for, you have to admit that Chizik and his staff that consists of guys name Trooper and Luper, is putting Auburn back-scratch that has already put Auburn back on the map. People said Auburn couldn’t recruit top-tier talent anymore. Well, Auburn is on its way to the number one recruiting class this year. Exit Ben Tate and Chris Todd. Enter Michael Dyer and Cam Newton. ‘Nuff said.

Boise State made a case for mid-majors competing for the National Championship, but was foiled yet again by two higher ranked powerhouses. If Boise State can go undefeated next year, they deserve to be in the title game. They have a tough schedule and should start the season highly ranked, most likely in the top 10.

But enough about this past year. You’re probably asking, “Well who do you think will be in the national championship game next year?” Well, I’m not going to buy in to Alabama repeating. Everyone is saying that they are returning most of their starters next year. Well, remember Florida? They returned just about everybody and look what happened this past year. History repeats itself. The S.E.C. west is going to beat up on itself. Everyone will be gunning for Alabama. If there are two teams that can make it through the season undefeated that are not in the S.E.C. and there are no undefeateds in the S.E.C., then we will see a new champion.

My Prediction:

Ohio State vs. Boise State

(If and only if Boise can make it through that schedule. They play Oregon State and Virginia Tech. If they make it through that, they deserve to be in the BCS title game.)

Ohio State wins and gets Jim Tressel some much deserved respect.
